In a prior post, we explored the many benefits of our woodworking classes for kids. Not only do the classes provide your child with a creative outlet, but they also help them develop their motor skills, enhance their self-esteem, strengthen their math skills, and help them build collaborative relationships with others. That’s pretty incredible if you ask us! We know that you want to keep your kiddo safe in the woodshop while they are reaping all of these wonderful benefits and today, the team here at The DIY Joint will review a few safety equipment essentials. Let’s get started!

Kids Woodworking Safety

While there are many pieces of protective equipment that a child should wear in a woodworking shop, there are four primary pieces that are absolutely essential. These include protective eyewear, hearing protection, gloves, and dust masks.

Protective Eyewear

As your child is working hard to make their custom creation, they will use a variety of hand and power tools that have the potential of producing flying bits of sawdust, debris, and even electrical sparks. A good pair of safety glasses is a must, as they have impact-resistant lenses and side screens to protect your kiddo’s eyes.

Hearing Protection

Woodworking equipment such as table saws, miter saws, hand sanders, and air compressors are not made to be quiet. In fact, many common pieces of equipment can produce sounds that are loud enough to be detrimental to your child’s hearing with continued exposure. A good set of earmuffs can go a long way in protecting your child’s hearing in the woodworking studio.

Gloves

Giving your children the opportunity to create something awesome with their own two hands is the best part about our woodworking classes for kids. You want to do everything that you can to help them protect their hands when they are working with various hand tools and power equipment, and a good pair of cut-resistant gloves will serve your child well.

Dust Masks

Just as you don’t want sawdust and flying debris to find its way into your child’s eyes, you don’t want your child to breathe them in. Buying a high-quality dust mask that fits your child properly ensures that they are breathing clean, dust-free air while they are working on their projects, protecting them from long-term harm of breathing in woodworking debris.
