INTRODUCTION TO FURNITURE MAKING

Throughout this 5 session workshop students will build a solid foundation for their venture into woodworking. Participants will learn how to mill rough lumber square, operate major woodworking equipment, practice precision joinery and glue-up techniques. By the end of this workshop, students will have crafted a round side table with a cross base. Successful completion of this workshop permits access to open studio for personal use. Note: This workshop may require additional time outside of the normally scheduled hours to complete the project.

MILLING LUMBER & ROUTER TABLE BASICS: PICTURE FRAME

frameFrom rough to ready! To the beginner woodworker, an old or rough board of lumber may appear unusable, but we’ll show you the practice of milling wood into smooth, square, and usable pieces. Once the stock has been milled, students will create a beautiful hardwood picture frame. Students will learn how to successfully cut miter corners on the table saw using the versatile Incra Crosscut Sled, then students will learn how to cut rabbet grooves on the router table. By the end of the workshop, students will gain confidence on the miter saw, jointer, and planer, router table, and table saw. Successful completion of this workshop permits access to open studio for personal use. Note: This workshop may require time outside of the normally scheduled hours to complete the project. All picture frame accessories included!

MILLING LUMBER: CUTTING BOARD

cuttinboardMilling lumber “square” is the essential first step in any woodworking project as it ensures joints fit precisely. Over 3 weeks, students will learn how to select wood from the lumberyard, mill rough wood square, and gain confidence on major woodworking equipment, including the miter saw, jointer, thickness planer, table saw, band saw, disc sander, and drill press. Additionally, students will learn how to seamlessly glue up pieces of wood to create a personalized cutting board. OPEN STUDIO CERTIFICATION

Participants will be assessed on their ability to use the equipment in a safe and competent manner to ensure their safety, the safety of others in the studio, and the integrity of the Joint’s equipment. MILLING LUMBER & JOINERY: PLANT STAND

plantMakers will begin with one plank of rough hardwood of their choice, milling it into a perfectly square piece. The milling process is an essential first step in joining two pieces of wood as it ensures a great fit. Students will create this plant stand by utilizing two basic joinery techniques, mortise & tenon and half lap joints, without the use of screws or nails. These joints can be transferred to a variety of projects, including table bases. Participants will gain confidence on major woodworking equipment, including the miter saw, jointer, thickness planer, mortise machine, and table saw. WOODWORKING FOR KIDS: BENCH PROJECT

During this one day workshop, parents and children will work together to build a practical wooden bench for the home. Woodworking has many benefits, including greater self-esteem, independence, improved hand-eye coordination, respect for tools and materials, and increased awareness of the world around you. This workshop is appropriate for children ages 9-12 years old at the time of enrollment. Children must be accompanied by and adult.
